Daily Digest: Did the Internet Matter?

Temple University's Institute for Business and Information Technology students, Sunil Wattal, David Schuff, and Munir Mandviwalla considered "How social media in particular shaped the '08 presidential primaries." Their conclusion? While YouTube and MySpace may help lesser-known candidates find footing, only blogs seem to correlate with boosts in Gallup poll numbers.

Top hits of the YouTube election

Top hits of the YouTube election

"Dear Mr Obama" is the most-viewed election-related video on the YouTube website, attracting more than 11 million hits.

Made by an Iraq war returnee, it's an example of how ordinary Americans have used the website to get their voice heard.

YouTube has provided a new way for people to consume and communicate their views - from the serious to the silly, the official to the outrageous.

"The power to control the message is no longer in the hands of the political parties and candidates or the mainstream media. It's now shared by the public at large."

"Some of the most popular videos are the ones which show a lighter side and tap into pre-conceived notions and bias"

"They tap into characteristics that we either find funny or we fear, and these sorts of messages help them become viral."

An example from The Huffington Post

McCain-Obama Parody: Like Hope, But Different

"The Huffington Post is an admirable enterprise, staking a flag in a new media landscape. Its success this year was made possible by the openness of the Web and the decline in what was once the near-monopoly power of old media institutions like The New York Times to set the agenda on national politics.”

How Real Are Obama's YouTube Numbers?

Gauging Obama’s YouTube Numbers

Andrew Rasiej, the co-founder of the Personal Democracy Forum, is convinced that the netroots are changing modern campaigning.

“With their own energy and perhaps their own naïveté,” he said, internet activists are knocking down the “top-down control of the campaign.”

But "We don’t know how much benchmarks like Facebook friends and YouTube views actually matter."
